So I FINALLY got to check out the film DOPE to see what all the hype was about. For those of you who have no clue as to what I'm referring to DOPE is a 2015 American crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa and starring Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Kimberly Elise, Chanel Iman, Tyga, Blake Anderson, Zoë Kravitz, and A$AP Rocky. The film was produced by Forest Whitaker, executive produced by Pharrell Williams, and co-executive produced by Sean Combs and is steadily garnering rave reviews and critical acclaim. While watching the film these 13 thoughts came to mind:
1) OMG is that Stacy from The Wood, when did he get out of prison?!
2) Fix it Jesus DELIVER HER LORDT!
3) OMG this cast is sooo #TBT Bruno Mars and Kumar meets Shondaland
4) Bit coins and propaganda. Gotta love it!
5) Wow he ate that Donut like GROCERIES!
6) MAJOR KUDOS FOR THE J. DILLA HOMAGE especially on this being the 10 year anniversary!
7) WAIT I know lil Kimora Lee and young Morris Chestnut arent about to...
8) Is this dude some kin to Grace Jones? I bet he's some kin to Grace Jones.
9) NO ONE in this theater reacted to that white guy using the n word... Desensitization much?
10) Pwahahaha Rick Fox said 3 young MEN!
11) She [Zoe Kravitz] looks like her father in box braids.
12) Finally a reputable black coming of age story film that isn't more than 10 years old.
13) I am definitely downloading this movie's soundtrack!
Needless to say there is no such thing as a perfect movie and DOPE is no exception, don't get me wrong the film is well pretty dope however I could have done without some of the obvious compensation via verbal product placement, and the rushed back story of Malcolm and his nonexistent parental upbringing should have had at least 5 minutes more of dialogue to help connect the dots. That aside the take away is to di whatever is you gotta do to get out of bad situations and environments—including but not limited to bad things? Hence the doubt entendre title. Go see it for yourself, you won't be disappointed that you did.
